Falling Skies: The Best Show of the Summer
Movies about the end of civilization have been in vogue since at least the late 1990s. There have been movies about doom coming from the skies like with Deep Impact and Armageddon, viruses ravaging mankind like I Am Legend and Contagion but it seems like the most popular of the apocalyptic movies have been about alien invasions like The War of the Worlds and Independence Day. And while films like...

Here’s a weird little poster for the upcoming The Dark Knight Rises movie. Weird in that since the angle on the buildings is almost straight up, the only way to see Batman like he is here would be if he were falling forward.

The Avengers Movie Review
3.5/4 Stars - The Avengers is the ultimate superhero team-up movie. This could almost be my whole review but since I like to keep my reviews at around 300 words and not nine I will write on…
Marvel Entertainment already has a great track record with their slate of comic book based films. They already have hugely popular films like Captain American, Iron Man, Thor and (the less popular) The...

Movies Have Always Sucked
Over the last few years there’s been a lot of talk that the overall quality of films has been slipping from previous decades. And this seems born out by looking at lists like the American Film Institute’s “100 Years…100 Movies” of the greatest films of the last century. With the likes of Citizen Kane, The Godfather and Casablanca on that list makes the recent top grossing...

Interesting that the covers for the Dark Horse digital comic for Falling Skies: The Battle of Fitchburg A) doesn’t seem to have anything to do with Fitchburg, Massachusetts but B), shows events outside the Falling Skies TV series and in other places like Argentina and The UK.

Wolfenstein 3D is 20
Wow! Wolfenstein 3D is 20 years old this year! I remember getting the first levels as shareware and playing them over and over again on our Windows 3.0 PC
And in celebration of 20 years of Wolfenstein 3D Bethesda Software has ported Wolfenstein over to a version that can be played in the browser.
I wrote this about Wolfenstein back in ‘01 and it still holds true today.

In celebration of the 50th anniversary of Mars Attacks, this comprehensive book is the first-ever compilation of the infamous science-fiction trading card series produced by Topps in 1962. Edgy, subversive, and darkly comedic, this over-the-top series depicting a Martian invasion of Earth has a loyal following and continues to win new generations of fans. For the first time, this...

The Amazing Spider-Man Poster
I think this poster for the upcoming The Amazing Spider-Man movie is pretty clever. When displayed at a theater, I think it would give the illusion of Spider-Man crashing through the back of the poster frame and into the theater lobby.

Haywire Movie Review
2.5/4 Stars - I didn’t go into the movie Haywire with a lot of expectations, how could I since the movie is essentially a 1980s action throwback flick about a female secret agent (Gina Carano) out for revenge when she’s betrayed after a mission goes wrong? But oddly enough, I didn’t just come out of Haywire not-hating the movie, I actually liked it.
In Haywire, Mallory Kane...

The Thick of It Premiers 4/28 on BBC America
The third season of the hilarious sitcom The Thick of It premiers Saturday night at midnight on BBC America:
If you’re into classy idealistic portrayals of politics like “The West Wing,” you may be surprised by BBC America’s third season of “The Thick of It,” which is the exact opposite in bureaucratic entertainment. BBC Four’s Award winning show is a no-holds-barred, satirical romp exploring the...

The Best TV Series of 2011
The best TV series of the 2010/11 season is the NBC series Community.
It’s heart-wrenching to watch a series as funny, compelling and dare I say brilliant as that of Community and to know that very few other people are watching. Very, very few. So few that NBC has decided that after the first of the year it will temporarily pull Community from the schedule in the new year so they can air...

The Best Movie and TV Posters of 2011
I’ve been picking what I think are the best movie posters of the year each year since 2006. And while I’ve always been able to find many interesting movie posters, it wasn’t until recently that posters for TV series started catching my attention. So, this year, I’ve decided to include TV posters in this “best of” list. Goodbye “The Best Movie Posters of...

Kenner’s Robin Hood Toys
Its not uncommon to find examples of genetic engineering within the realm of parumplasticus populus [Latin: little plastic people]. In fact, the re-purposing of action figure DNA happens frequently within a species. What’s not as common is to see unrelated species share the same genetics. Rarer still is to find that elusive action figure line that is bred almost entirely from foreign DNA. Some...

Community and their three-year old Beetlejuice...
Community just became the best-ever comedy in my eyes. From Wired:
If there was any doubt that Community was one of the smartest half-hour comedies to ever air on network television, allow us to enter this into evidence: The show spent three years setting up a joke about Beetlejuice, and that joke was simply an Easter egg hidden amongst other already amazing gags.
Here’s how it played out. Over...

John Carter of Mars White Ape Image
Here’s a new image from the upcoming John Carter (of Mars) movie. From EW:
How has John Carter come to find himself in this predicament?
I don’t want to give any spoilers away, but basically he needs an army to solve his big problem in the third act, and the only army he knows was his previous captors. When he goes back, the game has changed, and he gets incarcerated. This is what he has...
